Here at CookbookCreate.com, we wish that everyday is guacamole day. Today, September 16th, just happens to be the day that the rest of the country recognizes as “National Guacamole Day.” With my guacamole recipe at hand, you have no excuse to not join the fiesta. I promise this is the most low maintenance, most customizable recipe you will find.
My community, as for most Americans, is wonderfully complex. I am of Irish and Italian heritage, but I grew up in Texas on the border with Mexico. Spanish was my first language and I grew up in a town that is over 95% Latino. Tamales at Christmas, pan de dulce for breakfast, aguas naturales. Having lived in the Midwest for the past seven years, it’s these flavors, smells, and tastes that I miss the most. Mexican food (real Mexican food, that is) evokes memories from home.
You can imagine my surprise when my Ann Arbor friends and work colleagues began requesting my “recipe” for homemade guacamole. Recipe? I grew up with an avocado tree in my backyard, and fresh guacamole was always readily available. This was commonplace—one doesn’t buy guacamole; it’s just something one makes. So I share with all of you the guacamole recipe that has led to great conversations, great memories, and full stomachs.
Pico de gallo (diced yellow onions, tomatoes, and cilantro—all get equal billing)
Lime (really small one)
(I don’t really measure). Buy avocados that are soft to the touch, remove the skin, and then mash them. Mix in pico de gallo, jalapenos, lime, and garlic salt. How much? Mix a little at a time until the flavor has that right amount of kick. The only way to know for sure is to taste along the way!
