When I think of summer foods, I mostly think of light and fruity things, like popsicles, salads, or even pies. But summer is also the ideal time for grilling, which is about much more than the actual food you’re eating. It’s about having your friends over for a backyard barbecue, hanging out around the grill as your food cooks, fighting off mosquitoes, and watching the sunset.
My family grills every chance we get, and after many years of hotdog variations, we finally upgraded to the bratwurst and never looked back. We often fight over the last one, and usually my dad wins. If I’m lucky, he’ll split it with me.
This isn’t as much of a recipe for bratwursts as it is just a way to grill them (but power to you if you want to make your own!). It’s my favorite summer recipe because not only do the brats taste absolutely delicious, but they also remind me of spending time with my family.
Uncle David’s Bratwurst RecipeIngredients
- Bratwursts (any kind)
- Beer, preferably dark
- Hot dog buns
- Toppings (vegetables, mustard, ketchup)
Simmer bratwursts in beer for about 10-15 minutes, then finish them on the grill. You can vary the simmering time and amount of beer based on your own preferences. Place each bratwurst in a hot dog bun, and choose your own toppings and condiments to put on top. I like to put sautéed onions and peppers, and spicy mustard on mine.
This is my favorite summer recipe. What is yours?
